Presentation of the Learning Design for April-August, 1999

Mr. Peachy presented a proposed learning design for Futures Forum, April-August, 1999.

Purposes:

  • To develop the Futures Forum venue for bringing new ideas and innovative concepts into our environment and for sharing that information throughout the colleges

Basic Design

Eleven (11) days of group learning (entire Futures Forum) between now and the end of July, 1999;

  • Three of these learning days will be facilitated by the CCVC planning consultant, Mr. Burt Peachy and noted strategic planner, Dr. Michael Dolence via "The College of the Community" workshop in Claremont, CA on July 5, 6 and 7, 1999;
  • Five of these learning days will be facilitated by one of the Futures Forum Learning Teams (see below);
  • A three-day planning retreat to be scheduled for August 4, 5, and 6, 1999 during which time we will draft the collaborative planning process model and design the process by which we will gather input, reaction and consensus from the colleges. The CCVC Process Facilitators being trained this summer will facilitate this planning retreat.

After discussion, the group approved the learning design. (See Learning Design, posted at the website.)

Learning Teams

As a result of the approved learning design, the group divided into the following five learning teams:

Team One: Planning Process Models and Organizational Communications

Team Members: Convener - Larry Calderon; P. Scott Corbett; Kitty Merrill;and Jim Walker

Our schedule of meetings with Burt Peachy are:

First meeting -- May 25th 2:00 - 4:00

Second meeting -- June 3rd 2:00-4:00

Third meeting -- July 12th 2:00-4:00

Our presentation to the whole group will be August 4th

Team Charge:

This team will focus its activity on researching best practices in strategic planning process models with emphasis on multi-unit planning models within large organizations. The group will look at practices both within and outside of higher education to discover innovative ideas and concepts that could apply to our environment. The team will identify potential best practice sites that members of the CCVC Futures Forum may visit during the design phase (May – November, 1999). The team will conduct a self-assessment of current planning processes in the CCVC and identify gaps between current and desired practices. Additionally, the team will develop a communications construct that will be recommended for taking a new planning process model to the colleges during the fall semester. Finally, the group will be responsible for posting its findings on the CCVC website and conducting a daylong learning session with the entire Future’s Forum to share their research.

Team Two: Students and their Learning in the 21st. Century

Team Members: Convener- Cheryl Shearer

Floyd Martin; Farzeen Nasri; Shelly Barnett; Daniel Berney; Steven Arvizu; Deborah Ventura; and Karen de la Pena

Our schedule of meetings with Burt Peachy are:

Team Charge:

This team will focus its activity on researching the profile of the community college student of the first decade of the 21st. Century. The group should draw on existing research and demographic trends within the county, with in the state and the nation. In addition, the team should propose strategies to conduct original research to definitively understand what our county requires from the colleges over the next decade that must be addressed through the new CCVC planning process and any future transformational activity. Emphasis should be focused on providing integrated instructional and support services for students and access for all potential learners to all of our programs. We should address Terry O’Banions’ statement that future students will desire access "anytime, anywhere and in anyway they want." Finally, the group will be responsible for posting its findings on the CCVC website and conducting a daylong learning session with the entire Future’s Forum to share their research.

The group will look at current thinking within and outside of higher education to discover innovative ideas and concepts that could apply to our environment. Emphasis will also be placed on the development of accountability measures that would support institutional self-study for reaccredidation and strategic planning. The team will also conduct a CCVC self-assessment of its research capability, identify gaps, and recommend a research and accountability function that would support a strategic planning process. Finally, the group will be responsible for posting its findings on the CCVC website and conducting a daylong learning session with the entire Future’s Forum to share their research.

Special emphasis will be placed on identifying the individual skills sets needed for faculty and staff to compete in the 21st. Century educational environment. The team will identify the distinguishing characteristics of a "learning college" as well as the organizational support systems needed to facilitate these characteristics. Additionally the group will identify the brightest thinkers in education across America and develop methods of gathering that thinking and sharing it with the CCVC. Finally, the group will be responsible for posting its findings on the CCVC website and conducting a daylong learning session with the entire Future’s Forum to share their research.

The group will identify potential best practice sites that members of the CCVC Futures Forum may visit during a fact-finding phase (November, 1999-June, 2000). Additionally, the team will identify a selected list of workshop experiences for forum members to attend that will enhance our collective learning in this area. Noted individuals in this area may also be identified as potential speakers that CCVC would invite to future countywide colloquia. As a result of this research, the team will conduct a self-assessment of the organizational capability of the CCVC to identify gaps between the ideal and the actual with a set of recommendations of how the CCVC should be structured in the future. Ideally, these recommendations should contain any suggestions on developing best practices in CCVC resource development. These recommendations would be forwarded to the existing governance bodies for consideration. Finally, the group will be responsible for posting its findings on the CCVC website and conducting a daylong learning session with the entire Future’s Forum to share their research.

 Videotape: The Business of Paradigms – Anticipating the Future

Mr. Peachy showed a videotape to the group. Anticipating the Future- the Business of Paradigms with Dr. Joel Barker. Dr. Barker, a noted futurist, describes the following concepts in his presentation:

  • You can choose to change your paradigms – listen, especially to those "on the fringes" of your experience

These concepts were submitted to reinforce our need to stay open during this learning process to new ideas and to new information that may not fit our current paradigm.

The group adjourned at 4:15 p.m. after research materials were distributed.
