There are times that are red letter days, and this is one of them. There were times when it looked like we might never be able to work together. Two years ago, we met in the Cowan Center and began to talk about the three colleges and district service center. We didn’t know even how to develop a plan. We spent a summer of intense learning, talked all fall, and in December reached consensus on a planning model. This was an astounding feat: 100 people reaching consensus. And today we’ve reached consensus on the strategic plan. We deserve a round of applause for that.
Elton, Cheryl, Burt and I met Monday to discuss the coming year. He drew an analogy with a car trip he took with Elisha, traveling for 11 days from L.A. to Denver by freely ranging here and there. It was a wonderful trip. FF has done the same thing. It had a goal, which we reached today, but in one sense that was secondary. The journey of CCVC was one of transformation.
The last two days celebrated what we do: graduation at OC, VC and MC. Students are succeeding. Paul Orphalot, founder of Kinko’s, spoke at VC. As the students came in, he said to me that the students were happy, that the occasion was happier than a wedding. And that’s what we do.
The goal we had is almost a by-product, while the journey to it has been fundamental to the CCVC and everyone in it.
